Glory, Glory, Man United!

Archives for July, 2008

Its confirmed.  Chris Eagles has just signed for Burnley for an undisclosed fee.

Eagles who joined the Premiership champions at the age of 14, has failed to impress Sir Alex Ferguson enough to make himself a first team regular.

Eagles, despite figuring prominently in the recent African friendly tour, has decided his future lies elsewhere.

Good luck Chris.

Louis Saha to go?

Words are going around saying Roy Keane has (or is going to) made a £10m offer for Louis Saha.

Most would comment that this is going to be a good deal for Manchester United.  It is going to be a good deal for Sunderland too if Saha can remain injury free.  Saha will be remembered for being there when Man U needs a break, when he is fit. He is able to break down the toughest defences with his intelligent positioning, and ability to score crucial goals.

Saha is a striker who can knock in 20+ goals a season for your team, with him teaming up with Diouf, we can expect a tough strike force to be dealt with by the defences of Premier League teams.

He will be remembered as the player who forced out Ruud Van Nistelrooy just a couple of seasons back with his impressive form.

Match Date: July 27 2008 - Friendly

Manchester United wrapped up their tour of South Africa with a close win over Portsmouth, a team  they are meeting for the Charity Shield in the season opener and again in two weeks time after that for the Premier League.

Man U again played several young players, giving them the opportunity to shine.  Chris Eagles, though he scored, should have gotten several more.  Carlos Tevez, in the midst of news that he will become Britain’s most expensive player, missed a penalty but made up with a goal.

Frazier Campbell showed his pace, running rings round the Pompey’s defence but has nothing to show for.  Jonny Evans and Nemanja Vidic put in a creditable performance in the center of the defence, with Rio Ferdinand back home to be with his pregnant wife.

Jermaine Defoe, in his partnership with the newly signed Peter Crouch, scored a late goal for the Pompey.

The Red Devils should have scored far many than its opponents.  Both teams are expected to put on a better showing when they meet again for the Charity Shield.

Next on - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s testimonial.

Scorers: Chris Eagles, Carlos Tevez (Man U) / Jermaine Defoe (Portsmouth)

Match Date: July 26 2008 - Friendly (Vodacom Challenge Trophy)

Manchester United steamrolled over Kaizer Chiefs, chalking up an impressive 4 - 0 win.  Ryan Giggs, Wayne Rooney, Tom Cleverley and Fraizer Campbell scored for the Red Devils.

Rooney showed he can play well and control his temper at the same time.  Despite being targeted several times during the game, he kept his cool and contributed to the game with his intelligent passing and positioning.  He is rewarded with a goal and has a hand on the goal scored by rookie Tom Cleverley.

Let’s see if this form continues.  Next on - Portsmouth.

Scorers: Ryan Giggs, Wayne Rooney, Tom Cleverley, Fraizer Campbell (Man U)

Match Date: July 22 2008 - Friendly

Lee Martin grabbed the only goal as Manchester United beat Orlando Pirates 1 - 0 as part of the pre-season build-up.

Captained by Rio Ferdinand,  Lee Martin scored the winning goal after being played on by Frazier Campbell. Ben Foster also impressed during the game.

Scorers: Lee Martin (Man U)

Eric Cantona to rejoin Man U?

Eric Cantona has stated his desire to be the best manager in the world. He will only manage two teams, Manchester United and England. That would not happen until he is tired of beach soccer and acting.

Will he return to Manchester United? He would definitely be the right candidate to replace Alex Ferguson.

Watch this space for further developments. :D

Match Date: July 19 2008 (1430hrs) - Friendly

Man U were spared the blushes when Chris Eagles scored in the second half to save the team from losing at Cape Town.  Kaiser Chiefs took the lead from a first half penalty.

Gary Neville played almost an hour as part of his come-back from a long term injury.  Man U named a strong team including Tevez and Rooney but the South Africans proved to be a match.

Scorers: Jonathan Quartey (Kaiser Chiefs) / Chris Eagles (Man U)

Match Date: July 12 2008 (1500hrs) - Friendly

Man U played out an easy 2 - 0 win over Aberdeen in a testimonial game at Pittodrie.

Scorers: Michael Carrick (penalty), Wayne Rooney

Wesly Sneijder, one of the many players linked to Manchester United, has claimed the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo will upset the balance of the team at Real Madrid.

Citing examples of Arjen Robben and Robinho being similar player as Ronaldo, he claims the high wages Ronnie will get at Real Madrid (if he gets transferred there, that is) will unsettle the team, creating unhappiness amongst the current team of players.

Sneijder also claims the team does not needs improvement, and only a forward is needed (to replace Ruud perhaps).

There you go Ronnie, you are not even welcome there!

If you have been wondering how our new signing looks like, and plays like, here’s a video. Oh yes, just ignore the background music. :D

Let’s hope he is giving more opportunities than Rossi or Pique.

There are claims of him being the next Totti. What’s your take?

About The Author

I have been supporting Manchester United since 1976. I remembered watching them play in the 1976 FA Cup Final with Southampton, back in the days when television was a luxury to our family. I watched the game at a chalet actually, someone's birthday, can't remember who though. Man U lost that day, but won my heart for their spirited display and never-say-die attitude. Stepney, Coppell, McIlroy, Macari.. From then onwards, I only supported Man U.
